LVDT or Linear Variable Differential Transformer is another form of linear measuring device. The variable transformer description is because the movement of a core to induce energy from a center "master coil" any of two adjacent coils. As the induced signal on one coil goes up, the other goes down effectively multiplying the signal gain. LVDTs operate using a non-contacting induction principle, providing friction-free motion and nearly infinite resolution. These sensors have been refined and improved for over 50 years, making Sensata LVDTs the standard for flight and engine control position measurements.
