LVDT or Linear Variable Differential Transformer is another form of linear measuring device. The variable transformer description is because the movement of a core to induce energy from a center "master coil" any of two adjacent coils. As the induced signal on one coil goes up, the other goes down effectively multiplying the signal gain. An RVDT (Rotary Variable Differential Transformer) is an angular position sensor that produces an output voltage proportional to the angular displacement of a laminated rotor stack.
