Application Note: Draw wire encoders

19 November 2024

Encoders are analog or digital electro-mechanical devices used in a wide range of industrial applications and processes.

In this Sensata Application Note, we explore how draw-wire encoders are utilized in automated cutting operations.
Many industrial processes require precise cutting of raw materials to standard lengths. The materials can be wood, metal, or plastic, but if uniform processing is desired, an automated feed mechanism is essential.

SOLUTION

In our example, a metal rod is being cut into uniform circular sections. The feed mechanism uses a draw-wire encoder installed so that, as the metal rod is fed into the blade area, the spring-loaded wire retracts. The controller simply needs to count the number of pulses emitted by the draw-wire mechanism, ensuring that the saw makes a perfect cut every time. Since the output from the draw-wire encoder is compatible with industrial counters and controllers, it is easy to reprogram it for cuts of different lengths.
