These fluids absorb heat by changing phase — from liquid to gas — and release it as they return to a liquid state. While many traditional refrigerants like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) offer effective thermodynamic properties, they pose serious environmental risks due to their high global warming potential (GWP) and contribution to ozone layer depletion.

Carbon dioxide (CO₂), also known as R744, has emerged as a compelling alternative. With a GWP of just 1, it is environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and non-flammable. However, one of the key challenges in adopting CO₂ as a refrigerant lies in its significantly higher operating pressure compared to legacy refrigerants. This places greater demands on system components, especially pressure sensors, which must withstand extreme conditions while maintaining long-term reliability and precision.
