Battery Safety: Understanding Off-Gassing
Understanding Off-Gassing and the Power of Early Detection in battery production sites and more..
As battery energy storage systems (BESS) and large-scale lithium-ion applications become the backbone of the modern energy transition, the imperative for safety has never been greater. While these systems offer unprecedented efficiency, they are not without risk. Understanding the phenomenon of off-gassing is critical for anyone involved in the operation and maintenance of battery facilities.
What is Battery Off-Gassing?
Off-gassing is the release of gases—such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and various volatile organic compounds (VOCs)—from a lithium-ion battery. This process is typically a direct consequence of internal degradation caused by abuse or malfunction. When a cell’s internal environment is compromised, the components begin to break down, venting these gases into the surrounding atmosphere.
