Application example - Detection of gases in lithium-ion battery production

During the production of lithium-ion batteries, processes use or generate gases, which can be combustible or toxic. Electrode manufacturing - Drying process

In the production of electrodes for lithium-ion batteries, NMP is used as a solvent. NMP will only vaporize at high temperatures during the drying processes. As concentrations of NMP build up, the risk of explosion increases. An ideal location to detect NMP is within the exhaust duct. By utilizing direct insertion design into the exhaust duct, detection of NMP will be at the center of the duct and able to withstand high temperatures and high concentrations.

Cell assembly - Electrolyte filing process

A variety of solvents are mixed in electrolytes, such as DMC, EMC, and DEC. These have the potential to explode if vaporized, so gas detectors are required.

Cell finishing - Testing process

Every Lithium-ion battery is required to pass a test without emitting gas in a harsh environment. Combustible gas and toxic gas may be generated from the battery in the evaluation test process. Gas concentration monitoring is essential to prevent ignition and poisoning accidents during the testing process. When the gas detector detects the target gas, it is necessary to take outside air from the intake / exhaust damper to reduce the gas concentration in the test equipment.

• The Model SD-2600 is a fixed mount, continuous-monitoring detector head and provides a 4-20mA signal which indicates the target gas reading for use by a gas monitoring controller, recording device, or programmable controller. There is one relay, and the relay is used for the gas alarm or the fail alarm.
• The gas monitor is a fixed type detector head that continuously detects combustible gases and that performs the alarm activation when the gas concentration is over the setting value.
• This gas monitor is a safety unit, not an analyzer or densitometer which performs quantitative/qualitative analysis/measurement for gases. Please fully understand the features of the gas monitor before using it, so that it can be used properly.
• The gas monitor detects abnormalities in the air caused by presence of gases or other reasons (leak) with the built-in gas sensor. The concentrations of detected gases are displayed on the seven-segment LED.
• The gas monitor has a built-in alarm contact and can be used either as a gas alarm, fault alarm, or common (gas, fault) alarm.
• Gas concentration outputs in 4 – 20 mA.
